Wye Nature School (formerly Hay Montessori) offers an alternative to the standard state and private school models, and will seek to more seamlessly integrate various outdoor learning models (eg. Forest Schools) to provide a healthy balance to indoor learning. We will put a strong emphasis on learning in a “classroom without walls” where normal schooling is seamlessly conducted in woods, fields, riverbanks as well as in the classroom. From the Montessori model, we will combine mixed ages (three year groups) in a single classroom to provide conditions for a dynamic, social learning environment where pupils are self-directed and learn using hands-on experience.
Key Features
- Extension of classroom to outdoors: Use of outdoor space which is particularly important for children who are more creative, practical or active.
- Child-centred learning: Differentiation of lessons for students of all abilities and disabilities through vertical and flexible grouping (mixed age groups).
- Project-based and cross-curriculum learning
- Low teacher-pupil ratio: Allows for self-directed learning with teacher acting as facilitators on an individualised basis. Has been proven to boost pupils self-confidence as well as to lessen behavioural problems.
- Inclusive school: Inclusion of students with special needs and those that have been excluded (or near-excluded) from other schools.
- Curriculum balanced between academic subjects and art, music, hands-on activities
- A panel of part-time teaching resources and parent volunteers that can be used as student numbers and interest evolve over time.
- Ideal site will include land that has both open and wooded sectors.
We need to know that there are other likeminded parents in the local community that would be interested in sending their child (currently aged birth-8 years) to the proposed free school ‘Wye Nature School’. The Department for Education (DfE) requires all families to express their support by officially registering for Wye Nature School by giving their postcode and child(ren)’s date of birth. This indicates that parents would choose this school as their first option, if it is approved to open in September 2015.
PLEASE NOTE: If you previously registered for Hay Montessori, you must reregister now due to change of name and opening date. This will not affect the option to attend other local schools and will not register the child with the Local Authority. Unless you select “YES” when asked “Would you choose Wye Nature School as your child(ren’s) first choice of school?”, your child will NOT be officially registered.
